Womad Singapore 2006
I went for Womad on Saturday evening with Nawar. We’d asked Fizzie and Adila along but alas, Fizzie had tickets for the next day and declined to join us. The event as always was held at Fort Canning. Approaching the main entrance we saw a huge line of people. We flirted with the thought that maybe event security had meant bag checks and full body cavity searches, but they were just people who hadn’t thought to buy tickets earlier through SISTIC. We managed to breeze through with our tickets and onward to the event. We caught a little of Susana Baca representing Peru, but we were way at the back then with no way of squeezing in and the crowd was a little too mellow to get up and dance.
Naazrina
Photo from AsiaOne, which also features a vodcast interview with her.
This year’s New Paper New Face contenders are *ahem* shaping up quite nicely actually, but one that stood out to me was former Miss Singapore Universe contestant Naazrina Mohamed. Because I like curvy women and it’s nice to be able to see her again.

The Roots - All in the Music/ Here I Come/ Don’t Feel Right
The Roots new album Game Theory is dropping 29th August 2006. I’m sure there’ll be people who hate, but the tracks I’ve heard so far have reassured me that the sound is somewhere between Illedalph Halflife and Phrenology, which is a good thing.
The medley video sadly features only short clips from each song (and I wish they’d feature the rest of the band playing besides Thought), but you can hear the tracks in their entirety on their MySpace page.
And where is all this talk of Black Thought being a boring emcee coming from?

Rage Against The Machine to reunite, recruit fat dude.
The photo was apparently taken at a protest earlier this year. It’s nice to know Tom and Zack are able to take a photo with the fans, at least. From ZDLR.net.
In the meantime, there’s a new Audioslave single/ video out called Original Fire. It’s a cool concept, kind of like the video for RATM’s Renegades of Funk remake, although the quality on YouTube is terrible. I want to say the song isn’t that good, but I’ve been humming it every once in awhile.

Xymon from Random Ramblings put up these very well done ads for BBC World.

Mahzel Tov
Azmi should outsource the updating of his blog to me. Anyway, his sister just gave birth to a baby boy, and he’s got a temp position at an oil company. See, that wasn’t that so hard was it?
Ryan Star - In The Air Tonight (Rock Star: Supernova)
Ryan Star wins the encore again (deservingly), and interestingly enough with a Phil Collins song, although that song is “In the Air Tonight”. The thing about Ryan’s best performances is that it seems like two minutes is simply not enough. Ryan tends to fare better with the sort of mid-tempo, melodramatic numbers but I’m not sure how he’d fare with more upbeat, fists in the air kind of tunes that a band like Supernova seems to want to make its bread and butter.
Jearina Libre
Photos from Jearina’s birthday. Funny how fun get togethers always end up as confessionals.
do you have anything more challenging for me to read?
I have the smartest little girl in the world. More photos after the jump.
pass the ketchup
I finally got my results back, and to cut a long story short despite all the crap I actually managed to pass all the papers I was taking this year. I’m happy I passed but I can’t say I’m completely satisfied with my results although it got me through to the next year without having to resit any of my papers like I thought I would. I’d be happier with two extra marks for both the Novel and Renaissance and Restoration. Mostly I am amazed that I managed to have credibly passed Manjit’s modules (Victorians and Drama since 1860) although not to the degree that I managed to get 67 for texts I didn’t actually read.
If I still want to get a second upper I really have to knock next year’s exams out the box. I am wondering if I made the right decision in choosing not to go back through the college this year.

kill yr. idols
I’ll admit to only infrequently reading some of the blogs on my list these days, but I visited Velveteen Rabbi and found a piece she had contributed to Radical Torah which I found interesting because it sort of relates to where my head is at right now.
It’s almost a Buddhist teaching. When coveting enmeshes us, we can so easily become caught. And in a strange way, it feels good. It’s a familiar groove to slip into, wanting what the dominant culture values. And wanting feeds more wanting, and before we know it our cravings have overgrown the longing for connection with God. One’s heart can only long for so much at any given time, and when the heart is busy longing for what sparkles it is not longing for righteousness and for God.
Craving appears in subtle forms, too. The desire for praise. The desire for fame. The desire to be in control. One of my college professors used to point out, ruefully, that we like nothing better than righteous indignation — we like to be put-upon so we can puff up our chests and revel in how good it feels to be angry. That’s a kind of idolatry, too.
Read the rest here. The concept reminds me a little of Jane Eyre, which in turn reminds me of Mr Spencer. Which makes me think of him changing in the school’s parking lot.
But the issue is killing our cravings, not strange Englishmen.
lost
It’s the eleventh of August, and the question we should be asking ourselves is… where the hell are my exam results?
They should really be here by now. I think the graduating class hasn’t gotten theirs yet, but the first and second years already have.
