Running with Scissors

Running with Scissors

Originally uploaded by — Yg —.

Watched Running With Scissors today with Nurul. Yes, it was Joseph Fiennes and not Luke Wilson. I’m sorry. I think I was thrown off by the fact that I thought it was a Wes Anderson movie at first, and the fact that it featured Gwyneth Paltrow seemed to reinforce that notion.

It’s based on the book of the same name, which in turn is based on writer Augusten Burroughs early life. There appears to be some controversy over the truthfulness of Burrough’s story though, but there always is isn’t there? It’s actually gotten its fair share of bad reviews, but I’d hardly call it the Worst Movie of 2006. I’d say it’s entertaining, but it lacks dramatic impact. I laugh at the characters and the situations, but I can’t say I cared that much about them. Good performances for the most part though, especially from Annette Bening and I have to say I always appreciate seeing Evan Rachel Wood.

I wouldn’t consider it must-watch, but if you’ve got the time and money to spare, it’s worth spending an afternoon watching. I’ve however not yet read the book, but am assured that Burroughs is actually quite a good writer.

Rating: ★★★☆☆

mea culpa

Listening to: B*Witched - “Blame it on the Weatherman”

Frank_Miller_Priest

The subject of this movie and whether it’s supposed to be a remake of this movie came up a while back and Farhan was upset that I apparently got worked up about trying to point out his mistake, and while I didn’t see him complaining when I did it to Najib, he is right though. Maybe it’s all the anger I have inside me because of my mutilation., but I point out mistakes. It’s a personality flaw. I could’ve been a lawyer, but unfortunately I’m lazy too*. I did it when somebody was convinced that the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad were published in Canada or that Renée Zellwegger is Irish. Which is strange now, I guess, since I have a personal policy of avoiding arguments. I don’t talk about politics or religion because I feel like a novice in those areas, and besides I’ve come to the conclusion that people can defend any position by any means; logical, illogical or otherwise.

So, a laundry list of the things I dislike about myself. Choosing my confessions…

***

I hate talking on the phone. I really do. I think it lacks the human touch of a face to face conversation and I feel I’m much more articulate in writing than I am with speaking.

I’m terrible at meeting new people. I make light conversation, but I don’t like it. I always think people are sizing me up, and I never have a good grasp on what people are like until much later. I’m honestly not a very sociable person and I’m uncomfortable when meeting new people.

I can be very evasive sometimes, and often not even when I’m asked something I’m actually uncomfortable with, which is weird. I’ll give long winded answers to straight forward questions.

I often don’t check my phone for missed calls or messages for hours. I’m really sorry, I just don’t feel the need to carry my phone everywhere with me when I’m in the house.

I’m not a leader. I prefer not to be put in charge of anything since I dislike having too much attention on me. I don’t like the notion of having my every move assessed. I am paranoid. I worry that people are talking about me and I worry that they don’t even notice me. I know it’s weird considering this blog and how I always wanted to do theatre, but I like there being a clear distinction between private and public life.

I will avoid conflict and choose the path of least resistance under most circumstances. This ensures the minimum amount of stress, but it always leaves you wondering about roads not taken especially when I think about how the major decisions of my life were very often made for me by other people. I enjoy what I’m doing, but I worry about how much of an impact I’ll really be able to effect.

***

Watching my niece grow up I wonder how many of our traits are in our blood and how many of them we pick up. We generally agree that while she’s showing herself to be affectionate and generous, she’s also stubborn and bossy at the same time. I love her nonetheless, we all do, but I wonder how much of this will stick with her when she grows up.

Peace.

*Disclaimer: my mum says this all the time. See comments.

father and son (the gay mix)

While looking for this video…

… I found this video…

It may very well be the gayest thing to not actually have naked men making out in it. Stephen Gately might actually be the straightest thing in the whole clip. I’ll refrain from remarks about their hair. I think I prefer the version Ronan did with Boyzone (like the rest of them ever actually did anything) to his own cover. Besides the fact that while Ronan Keating’s entire catalogue appears to be made up of covers, his covers always tend to be quite bloodless, without enough of the artistry that made the originals popular in the first place.

Nothing beats this though. Cat looks a little like General Zod with his beard there.

shopping = death

Listening to: Cat Stevens - “Father & Son” - The Very Best Of Cat Stevens

I never remember my dreams anymore but last night I dreamt that I had committed some unspeakable crime against the state and was sentenced to death along with some other n’er do-wells. I remember I kept saying the shahadah, but I never actually got executed. I just kept getting led around a building which looked far more like a shopping mall than it did a prison complex (or even a prison industrial complex). Maybe it was because of a friend’s near death experience, or my grievances with the validity of the death penalty. Possibly it’s just the influence of Prison Break though.

Peace.

gay men don’t know from jeans

Listening to: Lil’ Wayne - ” D-Boyz ” - Dedication

After the past couple of years of sartorial exploration I’ve come to the realisation that very honestly, gay men don’t actually dress any better than the rest of us. The above video (with its thousands of comments on its YouTube page) makes that blatantly clear. Unless they’re the sort who really follows fashion and studies catalogues, fashion houses, designers, etc, they’re often slaves to fleeting fashion trends like anybody else. Which is why I’ve found myself to be skeptical of style makeover shows sometimes.

And nobody with a hair cut like that is allowed to label anybody else “emo”.

Also, if I have to see one more person do the fake gangsta/hip-hop pose like he actually knows something about it I reserve the right to slap the shit out of them. JNCO was never big with gangbangers, it was always more of a raver/skater thing and besides nobody’s been proud of wearing JNCOs since the 20th century ended.
